The cavity inserts – Removable tool steel blocks that contain the actual paver cavity geometry. Inserts drop into the outer frame and lock into place. Changing paver designs requires only new inserts, not a new frame.

This separation changes the economics of hollow paver production. The outer frame is purchased once. Inserts are purchased as needed for each new paver design. When a paver style is discontinued, only the inserts are retired. The outer frame continues in service.

What Makes a Quality Hollow Paver Insert

The cavity insert determines paver quality. UNIK manufactures inserts from Cr12MoV or 9CrSi alloy tool steel. These grades provide the hardness needed to resist abrasion from concrete aggregates while maintaining toughness to absorb vibration.

Surface hardness: HRC59-62 after carburizing heat treatment. This is significantly harder than standard structural steel, providing wear resistance across hundreds of thousands of cycles.

Dimensional tolerance: ±0.3mm on cavity dimensions. Hollow pavers require consistent thickness on all walls. Variation beyond this range creates weak points or fitting problems.

Surface finish: Ra 1.6 or better. A smooth cavity surface allows pavers to release cleanly without sticking. Rough surfaces cause demolding delays and edge damage.

Corner radius: 3-5mm on all internal corners. Sharp corners concentrate vibration stress and crack. Radiused corners distribute stress and extend insert life.

Heat Treatment for Hollow Paver Inserts

The heat treatment process determines how long an insert maintains its precision. UNIK uses a sequence of vacuum quenching at 980°C followed by multiple tempering cycles at 580°C. This creates a hard surface layer of 1.3-1.5mm while maintaining core toughness. Optional deep-cryogenic treatment to -196°C converts retained austenite to martensite, extending service life by over 30%.

Buyers should confirm that their supplier provides heat treatment documentation, including hardness test reports and carburized layer depth measurements.
