What Is an Interlocking Concrete Block Mould?
An interlocking concrete block mould is a precision steel tool that mounts onto a block making machine. The mould cavity is shaped to produce blocks with specific interlocking features - raised knobs on top, recessed pockets underneath, or rear lips that hook over the course below.
Unlike standard rectangular block moulds, interlocking block moulds require more complex cavity geometry. The interlocking features must be precisely machined so that every block fits securely with its neighbors. Poorly made interlocking features produce walls that shift, lean, or collapse.
UNIK interlocking concrete block moulds are CNC machined from low-carbon alloy steel with carburizing heat treatment. The surface reaches HRC58-62, while the core stays tough to absorb vibration. This combination delivers long service life and consistent interlocking geometry across hundreds of thousands of cycles.
Key Technical Features
Precision Interlocking Geometry – The interlocking features - knobs, pockets, rear lips, or side pins - are machined to ±0.2mm tolerance. This ensures that every block fits securely with adjacent blocks. Loose interlocking features cause wall movement. Tight features create stable structures.
Advanced Heat Treatment – Each mould undergoes carburizing heat treatment that hardens the surface to HRC58-62 while keeping the core tough at HRC35-40. The hard surface resists abrasion from concrete aggregates. The tough core absorbs vibration without cracking. This is especially important for interlocking block moulds because the interlocking features create thin sections that are prone to cracking.
Radiused Corners – All internal corners, including the corners of interlocking features, are machined with a 3-5mm radius. Sharp corners concentrate vibration stress and lead to fatigue cracks. A radiused corner allows stress to flow around the curve, eliminating this failure point.
Smooth Surface Finish – Cavity surfaces are finished to Ra 1.6 or better. A smooth finish allows blocks to release cleanly without sticking. This is particularly important for interlocking blocks because rough surfaces can damage the interlocking features during ejection.
Exact Machine Fit – The bolt pattern, locating pins, and overall envelope dimensions are matched to the customer's specific block machine. UNIK does not sell generic moulds that "should fit." Every mould is built to fit the machine it will run on.
