How Steel Choice and Heat Treatment Affect Mould Life
Concrete composition dictates the steel grade a mould requires. Standard mixes need a material that resists wear and withstands repeated vibration - 42CrMo meets this requirement with a proven balance of hardness and toughness. Highly abrasive mixes, such as those using sharp sand or recycled aggregates, accelerate surface erosion. For these conditions, tool steel like Cr12MoV provides the necessary resistance to slow down wear.
Heat treatment creates the second layer of durability. UNIK uses carburizing to produce a hard exterior (HRC58-62) and a resilient core (HRC35-40). The exterior protects against concrete abrasion; the core absorbs vibration without forming cracks. This combination delivers 80,000 to 100,000 cycles in normal production environments.
Precision Machining for Consistent Output
CNC machining centers cut each cavity to a surface finish of Ra 1.6 or better. This smoothness allows finished blocks to release from the mould without sticking, reducing material waste and keeping production moving at a steady pace. A 3-5mm radius is machined into every internal corner, removing the sharp stress points where fatigue cracks typically originate.
Dimensional accuracy is maintained at ±0.1mm across all cavities. When every cavity produces blocks of the same size, out-of-spec products become rare. For construction teams, uniform block dimensions translate to faster installation and more accurate material planning.
Custom-Engineered for Each Customer's Machine
Mass-produced "one-size-fits-all" moulds rarely deliver optimal performance. UNIK takes a different approach: every mould is designed specifically for a single brick machine brand and model. Technical specifications are maintained for European lines including HESS, MASA, ZENITH, BESSER, Poyatos, and Rometa; Asian manufacturers such as TIGER, Qunfeng, Hengxing, and Quangong; and American equipment from Columbia and BESSER.
For machines not yet recorded in the company's database, UNIK accepts customer-supplied drawings, worn mould samples, or clear photographs with measurements. The final mould is then manufactured to match the machine's exact bolt pattern, cavity depth, and stripper head clearance - no guesswork, no compromises.
Comprehensive Range of Block Types
UNIK's steel block moulds serve a wide spectrum of concrete product applications. In construction, they produce hollow and solid blocks for walls, foundations, and industrial flooring. For outdoor infrastructure, they manufacture paving stones, interlocking pavers, kerbstones, curb stones, and drainage system components. In landscaping and environmental projects, they supply grass pavers for permeable paving and retaining wall blocks for slope protection. Custom shapes are also available for architectural features and specialty orders.
Service Life Expectations Under Normal Conditions
Production schedules directly influence how long a mould remains in service. At single-shift volumes of 1,000 to 1,500 blocks per day, a UNIK steel block mould typically operates for 18 to 24 months. At double-shift volumes of 3,000 to 5,000 blocks per day, the same mould delivers 8 to 12 months of production. These estimates assume standard concrete mixes and routine maintenance.
Many competing moulds fail at approximately 30,000 cycles. UNIK's longer service life means fewer replacement purchases and less unplanned downtime over the same production period.
