Best Practices for Storing Moulds During Production Downtime

For concrete product manufacturers, moulds represent a significant capital investment. How these precision tools are stored during production downtime directly affects their lifespan, performance, and the quality of the products they produce. A mould that is properly stored will return to service in optimal condition, while neglected tooling can develop rust, dimensional inaccuracies, and surface damage that lead to costly defects and unplanned downtime .

This guide outlines industry best practices for storing concrete moulds during short breaks, seasonal shutdowns, or extended periods of inactivity.


Why Proper Storage Matters

Metal moulds are vulnerable the moment production stops . Heat, residual moisture, humidity fluctuations, and exposed bare steel surfaces all contribute to corrosion during storage . When a mould cools after shutdown, condensation can form on cavity surfaces, in cooling channels, and wherever moisture can pool . Even a stable storage environment carries enough ambient humidity to initiate rust on unprotected steel .

Beyond rust, improper storage can lead to:

Contamination from dust or debris that scratches cavity surfaces

Deformation from improper stacking or pressure

Damage to precision-machined surfaces during handling

Corrosion inside water lines or cooling circuits


Five-Step Storage Preparation Process

Step 1: Thorough Cleaning

Clean the mould immediately after the last production cycle . Any residue left on the surface-release agent buildup, concrete particles, or contaminants-can trap moisture against the steel and accelerate corrosion .

Cleaning Guidelines:

Remove all concrete residue from cavities and surfaces using soft, non-abrasive tools (brass, nylon, or wooden scrapers). Never use metal tools that can scratch the cavity surface .

Clean all accessible surfaces, including parting lines, corners, and recessed geometry where residue tends to collect .

For steel moulds, ensure the surface finish (Ra 1.6 or better) is preserved during cleaning .

Critical Step: Clean Internal Circuits
Cooling lines and water circuits are among the most overlooked areas in mould storage . Standing water inside channels is a direct driver of corrosion over time. Perform a thorough blowout of all water circuits before the mould goes into storage .

Step 2: Complete Drying

Following cleaning, the mould must be completely dry before any protective treatment is applied . Applying rust preventive over a wet or insufficiently dried mould traps moisture beneath it, defeating the purpose of the treatment .

Drying Methods:

Allow adequate air-dry time based on mould size and geometry

Use compressed air to accelerate drying on cavity surfaces and within circuits

Ensure no visible moisture and no feeling of dampness before any protective product is applied

Step 3: Apply Rust Preventive Coating

Once clean and dry, apply an appropriate rust preventive based on the expected storage duration .

Short-Term Storage (Days to Weeks):

Lighter protective coatings that provide surface protection without leaving heavy residue that must be removed before the next run

Long-Term Storage (Months or More):

Heavier, more durable rust preventive barrier

For enclosed storage, consider vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCI) in the form of packaging films or desiccant packs

Anti-rust oil applied to all steel surfaces

Step 4: Proper Packaging

A protective coating is only as effective as the packaging that maintains its barrier .

Packaging Best Practices:

Wrap moulds in VCI packaging film for an additional moisture barrier

Use impact-absorbing materials to protect precision surfaces during handling

For steel moulds, ensure anti-rust coating is applied before wrapping

Store moulds in ISPM 15-compliant crates if they may be moved or shipped

Step 5: Environmentally Controlled Storage

The storage environment is critical to maintaining mould condition .

Storage Environment Requirements:

Indoor Storage: Always store moulds indoors, away from moisture and dust

Temperature Control: Maintain a stable temperature to avoid repeated condensation cycles caused by temperature swings . An intelligent constant temperature and humidity system (around 15±5°C and 45±10% RH) is ideal

Flat, Stable Surfaces: Store moulds on stable surfaces to avoid deformation

Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep moulds out of direct sunlight, which can cause uneven heating and potential warping

Dedicated Storage Systems: Heavy-duty customised shelving with adequate spacing reduces collision damage and protects fragile components

Inspect all surfaces for rust, residue, or physical damage that occurred during storage or handling

Check cavity surfaces for any corrosion or pitting

Remove the rust preventive as required by your process
