What is a Hollow Mould for Concrete?
A hollow mould for concrete is a precision-engineered steel tool that mounts onto a block making machine. It contains specially designed cavities that form hollow cores within concrete blocks. These hollow cores reduce block weight, improve thermal insulation, and make handling easier on construction sites.
UNIK manufactures hollow moulds in a wide range of standard and custom configurations. Common block sizes include 4x8x16 inches, 6x8x16 inches, 8x8x16 inches, and metric equivalents such as 200x200x400mm, 150x200x400mm, and 100x200x400mm. Beyond standard rectangular blocks, UNIK also produces hollow moulds for specialty products including interlocking pavers, kerbstones, grass pavers, and retaining wall blocks
Materials and Heat Treatment
The service life of a hollow concrete mould depends almost entirely on material quality and heat treatment. UNIK builds all hollow moulds from premium steel grades selected for their specific application.
For standard concrete mixes with normal aggregate, UNIK uses 42CrMo alloy steel. This grade offers an optimal balance of hardness, wear resistance, and impact toughness. For highly abrasive mixes containing sharp sand, recycled concrete, or other aggressive aggregates, UNIK recommends tool steel grades such as Cr12MoV, which provide exceptional surface hardness.
Every UNIK hollow mould undergoes a controlled carburizing heat treatment process. This process hardens only the surface layer of the steel to HRC 58-62 while leaving the core at HRC 35-40. The hard outer layer resists abrasion from concrete. The tough inner core absorbs vibration from the block machine and prevents catastrophic cracking. This carburized construction delivers a typical service life of 80,000 to 100,000 cycles under normal production conditions.


Precision Manufacturing Process
UNIK employs CNC wire cutting and CNC machining centers to fabricate every hollow mould cavity. This approach ensures several critical quality parameters.
Dimensional accuracy is held to ±0.1mm across all cavity features. This tolerance ensures that every block produced meets the same dimensional specifications. Surface finish is maintained at Ra 1.6 or better, which allows wet concrete to release cleanly from the cavity after each cycle. Reduced concrete adhesion means faster cycle times and less wear on the mould surface.
All internal cavity corners are machined with a 3-5mm radius. Sharp corners create stress concentration points where vibration-induced fatigue cracks typically start. A radiused corner distributes mechanical stress evenly, eliminating this common failure mode. UNIK has observed that radiused corners alone can extend mould life by 30-50 percent compared to sharp-corner designs.
